Qualmark is New Zealand's official tourism classification and grading company. It provides internationally-recognised, independent assessment of accommodation providers, to help you make informed choices about where to stay.
The system encompasses a five level scale, expressed as a star rating:

Acceptable. Meets customers' minimum requirements. Basic, clean and comfortable. |

Good. Exceeds customers' minimum requirements with some additional facilities and services. |

Very good. Provides a range of facilities and services and achieves good to very good quality standards. |

Excellent. Consistently achieves high quality levels with a wide range of facilities and services. |
| ***** |
Exceptional. Among the best available in New Zealand. |
Hotels are graded on the standard of room type offered and additional facilities available. In premium tourist destinations, such as the South Island's West Coast, the Bay of Islands, Queenstown, Wanaka and Methven, location is also considered.
